FAQ

What is TEN Moves! ?

TEN Moves! is a campaign to raise enough resources to build 10,000 classrooms in public schools all over the Philippines. Its main strategy is to get 2 million people to donate P10 per day for 10 months. That will be P300 per month or P3,000 for the entire 10 months. Because of the huge target and the massive mobilization that this will entail, this public fundraising campaign requires mobilizing a large number of organizations and people around the country. It is expected to be supported widely by Filipinos and even non-Filipinos working together to address an urgent problem of the country. Thus, the name TEN Moves! also means “The Entire Nation Moves!”

Filipinos based overseas are invited to participate as well by donating US$10 per month, or $100 for the entire 10 months. Partnerships with the US-based Philippine Development Foundation (PhilDev) and similar organizations around the world are being established for purposes of reaching out to the Filipino diaspora.

What is Bayanihang Pampaaralan? How is this different from TEN Moves! ?

“Bayanihang Pampaaralan” or BP is the title of the private sector-led umbrella campaign for raising funds for classrooms, in response to the Philippine Department of Education’s call for support. The main strategy of BP is to solicit corporate donations, to seek grants from donor agencies, and to tap individual donors. TEN Moves! is part of BP and it is the campaign focused on harnessing the support of individual donors among ordinary Filipinos and even non-Filipino friends of the Philippines.
The target of TEN Moves! is to raise P6 billion until October 10, 2012 to build 10,000 classrooms.

Why 10,000 classrooms?

The total shortage based on DepEd’s data is 66,800 classrooms. DepEd’s budget and the expected counterpart from local government units can cover about 56,000. DepEd is requesting the private sector and the ordinary citizens to help in covering the remaining 10,000 classrooms.

How much does it cost to build a classroom?

Based on DepEd’s standard design and cost estimates, the construction of a quality classroom with floor area of 7 x 9 meters will cost an average of P600,000. The design and the cost have been reviewed by a team of private engineers and architects and both have been found to be reasonable. The cost may vary depending on the school’s geographic location, environmental conditions, and other considerations. The TEN Moves!’s fundraising target is based on this amount. However, the groups behind this campaign continue to look for other ways to build classrooms for lesser cost without sacrificing quality.

Will there be enough teachers and desks and other furniture for the new classrooms?

The Department of Education has provision for the needed desks and furniture. DepEd will provide for part of the needed teacher items. The restwill be handled by the local governments through the Special Education Fund.

How were recipient public schools identified? Can donors choose the public school that they want to benefit from their donation?

The proponents of BayanihangPampaaralan and TEN Moves! want to ensure that schools with the greatest and most urgent need are given priority. Thus, the resources that will be raised will be used to build classrooms in areas identified as priority by DepEd. Please note that the campaign is not intended to build new schools. Classrooms will be built in already existing schools. The list of the priority areas/schools that will benefit from the campaign is available here.
